The South Platte Protection Plan is a creative alternative to federal Wild and Scenic River designation. The Plan was created by a large group of local South Platte River stakeholders representing dozens of local governments, water suppliers, environmental groups, recreation interests, and landowners. The goal of the Plan is to maintain, and in some cases enhance the many remarkable values of the South Platte River from Eleven Mile Reservoir to the confluence with the North Fork, while still allowing flexibility to provide additional water supplies for the growing metropolitan area. The Plan provides benefits not available under Wild and Scenic designation, such as minimum flows, water operation guidelines, and endowment funding to enhance the river corridor. Perhaps most importantly, it provides an on-going forum for all interested parties to have a voice in how the South Platte is managed.
Rick McLoud is the president of the South Platte Enhancement Board, and will discuss the history of the Plan, it’s development over the last several years, and future challenges. Dave Bennett will discuss the Streamflow Management Plan, a key component of the South Platte Protection Plan. Dave manages the operation of Denver Water’s South Platte system, and oversees many of the goals and obligations of the Streamflow Management Plan.
